Appollonio wins first stage and Caldeira maintains leadership

Italian Davide Appollonio (Amore & Vita-Prodir) today won the first leg of the Tour de Portugal by bike after winning the first leg, with Portuguese Samuel Caldeira (W52-FC Porto) maintaining the lead.

At the end of 174.7 kilometers, between Miranda do Corvo and Leiria, Appollonio was the fastest, cutting the goal in 4: 47.08 hours, the same time of the Portuguese Daniel Mestre (W52-FC Porto) and compatriot Matteo Malucelli (Caja Rural), second and third place respectively.

Samuel Caldeira was delayed by a crash, but the incident took place within the final three kilometers, so he retained the lead with both Swiss Gian Frieseck (SRA) and Spaniard Gustavo Veloso (W52-FC Porto).

On Friday runs the second stage, the longest of the 81st edition of the Tour of Portugal, with 198.5 kilometers, between Marinha Grande and Santo António dos Cavaleiros, with the goal to coincide with a mountain count of the third category.
