Australian scientists aim to increase the capacity of transmitters

A team of Australian researchers managed to achieve the highest Internet data speed recorded from a single optical chip: 44.2 terabits per second (Tbps).

Scientists at the universities of Monash, Swinburne, and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) say that technology has the capacity to support billions of simultaneous high-speed Internet connections.

According to Arnan Mitchell, a researcher at RMIT, when reaching a speed of 44.2 Tbps, it is possible, for example, to download 1,000 high definition films in a fraction of a second.

In a study recently published in the scientific journal Nature Communications, the researchers detail that to achieve such a fast speed they used a new type of device. The “micro-comb” is smaller and lighter than the existing hardware in current telecommunications infrastructures.

In the future, scientists aim to increase the capacity of the transmitters, going from hundreds of gigabytes per second to tens of terabytes per second without increasing their size, weight or cost. The integrated photonic chips could be a technology that allows to reach the objective.
