Bárbara Bandeira, Olavo Bilac and Katia Guerreiro will be joining this year the poster of the concerts of the 9th Festival of Pão de Mafra, which will take place from July 5 to 14 next to the National Palace, announced today the City Hall.
The Festival do Pão, which takes place in Jardim do Cerco, next to the National Palace of Mafra, Lisbon district, opens this year with the concert of Yura Silva, on July 5, and performances by comedians Nuno Markl and Vasco Palmeirim, two days later.
The poster of the shows continues with Bárbara Bandeira (day 9), Olavo Bilac, in a concert commemorating its 25 years of career (on the 11th) and the fado singer Katia Guerreiro (13th).
The festival closes with the concert of the Light Orchestra of the Army, on the 14th.
With the event, the municipality intends to promote the saloio bread produced in the county and distributed throughout the country and promote endogenous gastronomic products, handicrafts, music, dance and traditions of the territory.
In this edition, the visitors are challenged to “put their hands on the mass”, confectioning the Pão de Mafra.
The Bread Festival also counts on small shops, folkloric ranches, shows and sale of bread and regional sweets, traditional games, saloia fair and exhibition of vehicles and agricultural implements.
The festival and all concerts have free admission.
The production and sale of Mafra bread goes back to the Middle Ages, but it was in the post-25th of April, with the bakers’ strikes, that they gained visibility, due to the consequent shortage of bread in Lisbon.
The domestic and artisanal activity turned into business and mechanized, but remained true to the origin of the traditional production process, characterized by high kneading time, short fermentation time and reduced yeast content.
Barril, Carvalhal and Encarnação are the localities of the county where the activity is most relevant, producing and distributing the bread for the whole country.
