Bernardo P. Carvalho wins National Illustration Award 2019

Illustrator Bernardo P. Carvalho won the National Illustration Award 2019 with the book ‘Hei, Big Bang! (Ninguém disse que era fácil)’

The National Illustration Award, to fulfill the 24th edition, has a monetary value of ten thousand euros, to which is added 1,500 euros to pay for the participation of the winner at the International Fair for Children and Youth Books in Bologna, Italy. Special mentions also include 1,500 euros for the same purpose.

Bernardo P. Carvalho, born in Lisbon in 1973, has a degree in Communication Design and Drawing, co-founded in 1999 the Planeta Tangerina editorial project, in which he has edited much of the visual work, solo or in partnership with the writers Isabel Minhós Martins and Ana Pessoa.

Bernardo P. Carvalho, who is also nominated for the Swedish literary prize Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2021, has his books published in more than twenty countries.

The jury of this 24th edition was composed by Susana Lopes da Silva, Luís Mendonça and Ana Castro.

In the previous edition, the National Illustration Prize was awarded to André Letria, for the book ‘Guerra‘, made with José Jorge Letria.

Created in 1996, the National Illustration Prize is awarded by the Directorate-General of the Book Archives and Libraries and recognizes an illustrator for the set of original illustrations published in a work published in the previous year.
