Biennial competitions to support the arts open today with € 18.6 million

The biennial arts support competitions of the General Directorate of the Arts (DGArtes) open today “with a total available budget of € 18.6 million“, plus two million euros compared to the last amount tendered.

On Monday, the Ministry of Culture announced the opening, in a statement, noting that “this is the first time the biennial competitions open in March“, in an “anticipation of the calendar in several months.

It also underlined the planned publication of the “final results in September“, which could enable the structures “to prepare the activity for the next two years in a timely and stable manner.

The contest will have “two major areas: Creation and Programming“: the first, Creation, will absorb 70% of the overall amount, and “will be the subject of six opening notices, relating to each of the artistic areas in the contest“; the domain of Programming will have 30% of the contests endowment, and “will only be object of a contest“, according to the Ministry.

The creative areas in the creative field are Visual Arts, Contemporary Circus and Street Arts, Disciplinary Crosses, Dance, Music and Theater.

Of the overall amount of support for the next biennium, the area of creation will be around EUR 13 million and the programming area close to EUR 5.6 million.

Regarding the distribution of support amounts by regions, “it is ensured that no region can absorb more than 40% of the total annual amount available, except for the areas of Visual Arts and Contemporary Circus and Artes de Rua.

In the field of Programming, “the minimum amounts to be guaranteed annually by region are as follows: 40 thousand for the Autonomous Region of the Azores and 40 thousand for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 150 thousand euros for the Algarve and another 150 thousand euros for Alentejo “.

In this area, there are 400 thousand euros reserved for the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, as well as for the Central Region and another 400 thousand Euros for the North.

In the field of Creation, the financial allocation will be made by the artistic areas of this field: Visual Arts, Contemporary Circus and Street Arts, Disciplinary Crosses, Dance, Music and Theater.

The insolvency proceedings guarantee that, if there are eligible entities, no region cannot be represented“, in the results, with the exception of “Areas of Visual Arts and Contemporary Circus and Artes de Rua”.

This is the first multi-year contest opened by the new director-general of the Arts, Américo Rodrigues, nominated in February.

The definitive version of the revised and simplified arts support model was published on March 1, in the Diário da República, and has since been open competitions in the field of Internationalization and for the simplified Program Support Program.
