Carbon-zero neighborhood creation in Matosinhos awarded by Brussels

The Living Lab Carbono-Zero project, from Matosinhos, today won the European Business Promotion Award (EEPA), resulting from a collaboration between the municipality and CEiiA – Center for Engineering and Product Development, the municipality announced.

Attributed by the European Commission (EC), the project included a batch of 503 papers presented by 32 countries and, according to CEiiA, won in the category “Support for the Development of Ecological Markets and Resource Efficiency”.

The project envisions the creation of a local carbon market where citizens are rewarded for having mobility behaviours that aim to save CO2 emissions, he adds.

The prize was delivered in Graz, Austria, to the mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, who was accompanied by the councilor José Pedro Rodrigues, the first being the Living Lab Matosinhos “a space [a neighborhood] delimited in the city where aims to experiment and test innovative technological solutions in real context and with strong user involvement. ”

He went on to say: “all [solutions] are aimed at decarbonising the economy, thus allowing more comfortable forms of movement and being committed to a more sustainable future in accordance with the commitments of the United Nations and the 2030 Program.”

In the Living Lab of Matosinhos “a set of intelligent technological solutions in the areas of mobility, energy, environment and buildings are being tested and experimented, in a real context, with a view to creating a zero carbon neighbourhood”.

For the person responsible for the project at CEiiA, Catarina Selada, the award “represents an acknowledgement of work towards innovation for sustainability, contributing to the decarbonization of cities”, which presents as one of the “most disruptive concepts” the “creation of a local carbon market “.

In practice, by adopting more sustainable modes of mobility, citizens “earn credits from CO2 emissions saved, which can be used to purchase green goods and services,” the press release adds.

The rewards “do not involve money, but credits that can be used in services provided by the municipality,” explained Catarina Selada, noting that “CO2 emissions saved are accounted for by the CEiiA mobility platform, the first to account for emissions saved in real time”.

The project, “which will run for two more years, represents an investment of one million euros and involves 18 partners, from companies and knowledge centres to mobile operators and local associations,” the press release reads.

Established in 2005 by the European Commission, EEPAs aim to identify and recognize successful activities that support and stimulate entrepreneurship and innovation.

CEiiA is a Product Engineering and Development Center that designs, develops and operates products and services in the mobility industries, namely Automobile and Urban Mobility, Aeronautics, Sea and Space, with a presence in several countries in Europe and Latin America.
