Carlos do Carmo, Julieta Monginho and Cristina Cosme recieve Estoril Sol Awards on the 26th
In a solemn ceremony, scheduled for the 26th of November, starting at 6 pm, in the Casino Estoril Auditorium, the Minister of Culture, Graça Fonseca, presents the Vasco Graça Moura Prize – Cultural Citizenship to Carlos do Carmo, as well as the Prizes Literary Fernando Namora and Agustina Bessa-Luis, instituted by Estoril Sol, and referring to 2019, respectively, to Julieta Monginho and Cristina Cosme.
The Jury decided to award the Vasco Graça Moura Prize – Cultural Citizenship, in the fifth edition, to Carlos do Carmo, “exemplary individuality in an area that Vasco Graça Moura was very fond of and to which he contributed with numerous poems: Fado”.
The minutes of the Jury read that “Carlos do Carmo, coming from a family linked to Fado, revealed himself as one of his main voices early on. The national and international awards he obtained for the quality of his record editions, where he emerges as one of the greatest interpreters of a Fado that he knew how to renew, account for one of the most exemplary careers in the Portuguese artistic panorama.
From an early age, his voice knew how to break borders, cross generations, making Fado an artistic expression of universal expression. This universal expression was decisive for the Fado Candidacy for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, of which Carlos do Carmo was one of the ambassadors”.
The jury also highlighted “the fundamental role of Carlos do Carmo in publicizing the greatest Portuguese poets, of whom Vasco Graça Moura is an example”.
Regarding the 22nd edition of the Fernando Namora Literary Prize, with a monetary value of 15 thousand euros, the Jury distinguished Julieta Monginho for the novel “Um Muro no Meio do Caminho”.
In the minutes, it was registered that “Um Muro no Meio do Caminho” is built “on one of the most poignant contemporary tragedies: that of refugees, especially Syrians, fleeing from increasingly wild human follies. The torments experienced in refugee camps, particularly in the camp on the island of Scios, draws the context in which Julieta Monginho situates the problem of this contemporary drama”.
The Jury also emphasizes that “writing in a very lively and dynamic record benefiting from the personal experience she lived in the Scios field in 2016, the author traces portraits of women immersed in a universe of pain and mourning, but also of hope. A book that, in the form of a look that is both affectionate and sad, reveals to us the face of a humanity lost from itself”.
In turn, in relation to the 12th edition of the Agustina Bessa-Luís Revelation Literary Prize, with a value of 10,000 euros, the Jury distinguished Cristina Cosme with the original work “Silvana”, considering her “a novel that articulates, with ease the game of prudence and cunning of human relations”.
In the Jury’s minutes, it is observed that the novel takes Lisbon as “a scenario where the imagination circulates personal and loving relationships. The City and its places draw a geography of affective paths, and sometimes dreams and fantasies of the protagonist, Silvana, a lonely woman in search of herself”.
