Carrilho da Graça will be honored at the Guadalajara Book Fair

The architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça will be honored at the architecture meeting of the Book Fair in Guadalajara, Mexico, which will take place from November 24 to December 2, with Portugal as a guest country.

The announcement was made Friday night in Mexico, Saturday morning in Portugal, at a meeting with the press of the University of Guadalajara’s University Center for Art, Architecture and Design (CUAAD), Ernesto Flores Gallo.

The 30-year trajectory of the Portuguese architect, “developed in close relation between professional and academic practice”, as well as “the purity, elegance, forms and lines of his work are some of the reasons why João Luís Carrilho da Graça will be recognized with the ArpaFIL 2018 Homage, “said Ernesto Gallo, quoted in the organization’s statement.

Born in Portalegre, Carrilho da Graça, 65, Pessoa Award in 2008, he is the author, among other projects, of the Cruise Terminal of Lisbon, Pavilion of Knowledge – Living Science, School of Social Communication, Museum of the Orient , the archaeological museum of Praça Nova do Castelo de São Jorge and the School of Music of the Polytechnic School in the Portuguese capital.

Carrilho da Graça graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon in 1977, the year he began his professional activity. He was a professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the then Technical University of Lisbon from 1977 to 1992, professor at the Autonomous University from 2001 to 2010 , and the University of Évora, since 2005, where he headed the Department of Architecture.

He was nominated several times for the European Architecture Prize Mies van der Rohe (1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2009, 2011, 2013), distinguished with the Valmor Prize by the Pavilion of Knowledge of the Seas (1998) and the Music of Lisbon (2008).

His work included awards such as the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), the Order of Merit of the Portuguese Republic (1999), the Knight of Arts and Letters of the French Republic (2010) ) and the Medal of the Academy of Architecture of France (2012).

The ARPAFIL meeting on architecture, heritage and art has been held by CUAAD since 1995, at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL Guadalajara), with the aim of sharing and disseminating the experience of professionals to young architects and the general public, according to the presentation of the initiative.

Along with the homage, which will be held on November 30th, ArpaFIL organizes the Young Architects Competition, open to students of architecture, urbanism, photography, visual arts, restoration or similar.

The Portuguese participation in FIL Guadalajara will involve more than 40 Portuguese-speaking writers, such as António Lobo Antunes, Mia Couto, Hélia Correia, Germano Almeida and Manuel Alegre, already distinguished with the Camões Prize.

Teolinda Gersão, Dulce Maria Cardoso, José Eduardo Agualusa, Ana Luísa Amaral, João de Melo, Lídia Jorge, Ondjaki, Gonçalo M. Tavares, Afonso Cruz and Ricardo Araújo Pereira are other authors already announced.

The program extends to music, dance, theater, cinema and the arts, with the participation of creators such as Tiago Rodrigues and Paulo Ribeiro, with the assembly of exhibitions dedicated to Almada Negreiros and Ana Hatherly, shows of musicians such as Camané, Capicua and Dead Combo, and the screening of films by directors such as.

During the FIL Guadalajara will also be presented the Ibero-American Prize for Children and Youth Literature, to which the candidate Alice Vieira is a candidate.

Organized by the University of Guadalajara since 1987, FIL Guadalajara is the largest book fair in America and the second largest in the world after the Frankfurt fair in Germany.

Every year, it has more than 800,000 visitors, during its nine days, and has more than 2,000 publishers from 47 countries, and more than 700 writers of different languages.
