Portuguese judoka Catarina Costa won the bronze-medal in the -48 kg category at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam today, after beating Russian Sabina Giliazova in the final match.
After winning the Brasilia Grand Slam, Catarina Costa returned to the podium, defeating the Russian waza-ari, with an attack soon opening the match.
Catarina Costa, who was exempt from the first round, defeated Lin Chen-Hao of Taiwan by ‘ippon’, before being defeated by Spaniard Laura Martínez Abelenda, also for the top score.
In the recap, the Portuguese defeated the Spanish Julia Figueroa, to qualify for the dispute of the bronze medal.
At -57kg, Telma Monteiro, also exempt from the opening round, defeated German Amelie Stoll for ‘ippon’, but ended up out of competition for South Korea’s Kim Jandi for penalties.
Rodrigo Lopes, who came from fifth place in Brasilia at -60kg, failed to repeat his performance in Abu Dhabi, falling in the second round against Brazilian Phelipe Pelim after beating Bulgarian Yanislav Gerchev.
João Crisóstomo was eliminated in the first match of -66 kg, losing to the Cuban Orlando Polanco.
