Catarina Vasconcelos documentary nominated at the International Association

The International Documentary Association has already made the first choice of documentaries – in short, and feature films – among the approximately 500 films submitted, and the ‘shortlist’ for the annual awards includes ‘A metamorfose dos pássaros’.

Speaking to Indiewire, the association’s executive director, Simon Kilmurry, explains that this year they received films that demonstrate a huge thematic diversity and approach to the documentary format.

There will be an honor list on November 10, nominees will be revealed on November 24 and winners will be announced in January, in 16 different categories, including ‘best documentary’, ‘best documentary short’, ‘best director’ and ‘ best photograph ‘.

‘A metamorfose dos pássaros’, which is due to premiere in Portugal in the first quarter of 2021, is Catarina Vasconcelos‘ first feature film and has been in international circulation for festivals and film shows, where she has won several awards.

The film, whose narrative crosses documentary and fiction, is part of the history of the director’s family, in particular the paternal grandmother, who she never got to know.

In February, at the world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, the film won the International Critics Award.

Since then, she has won distinctions such as the Best Film Award at the Vilnius Festival (Lithuania), and the Special Jury Award at the Taipei Festival (Taiwan). It also received the Best Film Prize at the Dokufest Festival (Kosovo) and the Zabaltegi – Tabakalera Prize at the San Sebastián Film Festival (Spain).

At the beginning of September, he won the audience award at IndieLisboa, this month he was also distinguished by the public and received the artistic contribution prize at the Curitiba Film Festival (Brazil).

Last week it made its debut in Austria, within the framework of the Viennale – Venice Film Festival, and this week it will be shown at the Documentary Film Exhibition in Bogotá, Colombia.

In November, the film will be at Zinebi – International Documentary and Short Film Festival in Bilbao, Spain.
