The Vila Nova de Cerveira Art Biennial opens today its 20th edition, which will feature a tribute to the artist Cruzeiro Seixas and the presentation of more than 600 works.
The 20th edition of the biennial will be inaugurated today, at 15:30, at the cultural forum of that village in Viana do Castelo district, in a session chaired by the Minister of Education, Tiago Brandão Rodrigues.
The event will run until September 23, with the theme “Traditional Plastic Arts and Digital Arts – The Discourse of (Des) order”, “maintaining the format adopted since the first edition in 1978, affirming itself as a meeting place , debate and investigation of contemporary art, in a concerted program with the higher education of the arts at European level “, according to the organization.
According to the Biennial Art Foundation of Cerveira (FBAC), which organizes the event, the tribute to the painter Cruzeiro Seixas, “one of the greatest exponents of Portuguese surrealism”, includes a retrospective exhibition of his artistic and poetic work.
“Through the 120 pieces on display, from public and private collections, the public will be offered a new reflection on the artistic movement,” the organization said.
Throughout the event, “will be presented more than 600 works, 400 artists, more than 30 countries.”
According to FBAC data, the biennial of art “the oldest in the country and the Iberian Peninsula, counted in this edition, with the registration of 437 applications and 717 works by artists from 43 countries.”
In total, “162 works of 143 artists were selected and will be presented to the public at Castelo de Cerveira”.
Those works were selected by the jury of the international competition of the 20th International Biennial of Art of Cerveira, which was composed of artists, researchers and teachers of higher education in the area of ??contemporary art, among them Albuquerque Mendes, António Olaio, Cabral Pinto, Jaime Silva, Ignacio Barcia Rodríguez, Miguel Carvalhais and Sandra Vieira Jürgens.
Represented will be artists such as Graça Morais, Silvestre Pestana, Ana Vidigal, among many others as the latest winner of the Novo Banco Revelação award, Maria Trabulo.
The 20th-century village of Alfândega da Fé is one of the exhibition centers of the Cerveira International Biennial of Art with the exhibition “XX Artistas na Casa”, which starts on Saturday and ends on September 23rd.
To celebrate its 40 years of existence, the event once again broadens its exhibition scope, showing exhibitions at Alfândega da Fé in the district of Bragança and in Monção in the Alto Minho. At the end of the year, Camões – Centro Cultural Português, in Vigo, Galicia, will also host a biennial exhibition.
Until September, “there will be spontaneous actions by artists and performances, both within the cultural forum of Cerveira and in the public space, whose content will be designed in an interactive and interacting with visitors.”
