Chilean university wants to create course for Portuguese formation

The University of Santiago de Chile wants to create a university course for the training of Portuguese teachers, said the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, during a visit to the South American country.

“One aspect that I think it is important to emphasize is the promise of the dean (director) of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Santiago, Chile, which is one of the great universities in the country, to create a university-level training course for Portuguese teachers” , said Teresa Ribeiro, by telephone, from Punta Arenas, Chile.

“I think this is a moment of great significance, which in the future can have multiplier effects for the diffusion of the Portuguese language in Chile,” he said.

The secretary of state stressed that “Chile’s interest in the Portuguese language is associated with the neighbor, Brazil,” the curiosity for Portuguese culture and “Fernão de Magalhães, a prominent figure in Chile.”

Teresa Ribeiro has been since Thursday in the South American country, where she is making political contacts and participating in activities related to the commemorations of the 500 years of the circumnavigation trip initiated by the Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães.

“The Fernão de Magalhães chair was also launched at the University of Playa Ancha in Valparaíso, and we have given great importance to this creation, which has the name of a very important figure both for Chile and Portugal,” said the secretary of State.

The launch of the chair “is particularly important” in the context of the celebrations, in Portugal and also in Chile, of the 500 years of the circumnavigation trip, underlined the Secretary of State.

“I was in Punta Arenas yesterday for the launch of the Chilean commission for the celebration of the 500 years of the circumnavigation trip. This was the presence of the President of Chile (Sebastián Piñera), which is a sign of the commitment of Chile with the Maghremal celebrations, “said Teresa Ribeiro.

Ferdinand Magellan left the port of Seville in August 1519, commanding a fleet of five vessels carrying more than 260 people of various nationalities (Portuguese, Spaniards, Italians, Germans, Belgians, Greeks, English and French were among those present) and included sailors, academics (such as the Italian writer Antonio Pigaffeta, who compiled a detailed account of the voyage), among others.

Magellan was to die in the Philippines in 1521, during a battle with a tribe in which the Portuguese-led crew was at a strong numerical disadvantage.

Only one of the vessels, Vitoria, commanded by Juan Sebastian Elcano and with only 18 of the 260 crew, returned to Spain in 1522, which would make them the first to complete a trip around the globe.

Teresa Ribeiro will also have a meeting with the Chilean Minister of Culture, where she will discuss “the possibilities of collaboration between Portugal and Chile in cultural matters”.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs returns to Portugal on Tuesday.
