Compulsory sustainable food in canteens and coffeehouses

Law now published in Diário da República obliges canteens and public canteens to provide food products with quality, origin and environmental impact certification within 90 days.

The intention of the law is to promote the sustainable consumption of local and certified production in central, local and regional government bodies and services and public higher education institutions.

These proximity criteria and lower logistical and distribution costs will be valued as well as local production and use of fresh and seasonal foods.

The legislation is envisaged within 60 days after entry into force and gradual change during 2020/21.
