Ethiopian musician and composer Mulatu Astakte, known as the ‘father’ of the ‘Ethio-Jazz’ style, performs in January in Lisbon and Braga, as part of a European tour, announced today the promoter Sons em Trânsito.
According to the promoter, Mulatu Astakte performs on January 11 at the Capitol in Lisbon, and on January 12 at Theatro Circo de Braga.
“The musician who composes and plays several instruments, from piano to percussion, is touring Europe with multiple exhausted dates, celebrating the 50 years of the genre that he created and that mixes, in his unique style, pop, modern jazz and traditional Ethiopia, “the prosecutor said in a statement released today.
Mulatu Astakte, born in Ethiopia in 1943, was the first African student to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, where he received an honorary degree in 2012.
Sons en Trânsito recalls that “since the 1970s, Mulatu Astakte has been one of the most acclaimed musicians of his continent and is considered worldwide the most reputed representative of the golden age of Ethiopian music.”
“At the same time that it exhausts the most prestigious auditoriums and performs in World Music Festivals, Mulatu Astatke has also been present in some of the most renowned indie and pop rock music events such as Primavera Sound (Barcelona) and Field Day (London ), “the statement said.
