Cuca Rosetta records album dedicated to Christmas in a “jazz sonority”

Cuca Rosetta’s new album, ‘Luz de Natal’, is entirely composed of Christmas or Marian-inspired songs, such as Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’, recorded in a “jazz sound” and will be released in early November.

Cuca Roseta, said that the realization of this CD is a “long-time wish”, because at home parents have always heard Christmas songs by Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra, “an idea was to sing them in Portuguese “, adding an unpublished, ‘Vou Tentar’, of which the singer signs lyrics and music.

“I tried to join a whole life, and show another side of me, to sing these Christmas songs in Portuguese,” said Cuca Rosetta, who before performing as a fado singer sang in choruses, whose repertoires included songs about this theme.

Cuca Roseta is responsible for the Portuguese versions of themes such as ‘Hark the Harold’, entitled ‘We’re Almost at Christmas’, ‘Jingle Bell Rocks’, titled ‘Sai Out Fora’, ‘Winter Wonderland’ ‘Toca o Bell’, or ‘The First Noel’, sung under the title ‘Born the Love’.

The singer explained the option for the Portuguese translation: “I thought: Why not listen to these songs, as something that is ours?” Everyone knows them, but bring them closer to us, with our stories, and our traditions … ”

In this CD, Cuca Rosetta has the participation of the Choir of Santo Amaro de Oeiras and the Mixed Choir of the University of Coimbra. Among the instrumentalists, he counts on the members of the string quartet Trindade and also with Ruben Alves (piano), Miguel Amado (bass and double bass) and Carlos Miguel Antunes (drums and percussion).

The creator of “Balelas” said she opted for a “jazz sound” that she feels closer, “because the songs chosen would not fit into fado.”

“This is a Christmas album that is for everyone,” said the interpreter of ‘Love Thief’, citing ‘VouTentar’, the theme he signs, in which he says: “I’ll try to liven up the thought.”

With this album, ‘Luz de Natal’, “I want to bring this joy and nostalgia that Christmas has to all people, even those who may be sad.”

Most of the songs are in Portuguese, but Cuca Roseta sings some in English, namely ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’, ‘Silver Bells’, ‘The Christmas Song’, as well as ‘White Christmas’, initially recorded by Bing Crosby, and ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’, which Judy Garland created for Vincente Minnelli’s ‘There’s No Way Like Our Home’, which was followed by interpreters as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Tori Amos, Doris Day, Sam Smith, James Taylor or Bob Dylan.

Cuca Rosetta included Franz Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ (1797-1828), and Charles Gounot’s (1818-1893), ‘Adeste Fideles’, an anthem attributed to King John IV, and liturgical chant ‘Gloria in Excelsis’.

The performer started recording this album last May and hopes that “it could be an inspiration for other artists” to record a CD dedicated to Christmas in the future.

The songs ‘Oh Holy Night’, ‘Jingle Bell’ (‘It’s Christmas’), ‘Deck the Hall’ (‘The Big Day’) are also part of the lineup, sung in Portuguese. , ‘Silent Night’, ‘Oh Christmas Tree’ and ‘The Little Town’.
