D.A.M.A respond “with energy” to the language barrier in Macao

The Portuguese band D.A.M.A debuted in Asia today when performing in Macao, the first of four concerts in which the group wants to respond to the language barrier with “energy and portugalidade”.

“We have a special flavor singing in Portuguese here. We bring energy and we are going to try to liven up people, we have to go there to overcome the language barrier,” Miguel Cristovinho, one of the vocalists, told Lusa before the first concert.

The pop / rap band, from Lisbon, is one of the highlights of the 10th cultural week of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, which brings together more than 130 artists and several exhibitions of Portuguese-speaking dance, music, theater, photography and gastronomy.

“We finished the last tour and we just wanted to go to Asia, to have the experience of playing for those who do not understand Portuguese. It will be a challenge, but we will enjoy it,” said Francisco Maria Pereira, another member of the trio.

‘Kasha’, as it is also known, revealed that all concerts will have the same arrangement, but will condense the best known songs from the three albums, in a more energetic concept to ‘infect the audience’.

“The four concerts will have the same arrangement and we expect to infect the audience with our Portuguese, because we will only sing in Portuguese,” he said.

Miguel Coimbra, also a member of the group, has lived in southern China and promises to surprise the audience with “a few words in Chinese”.

For the musician, the concerts in Macao can be “a door to other shows”.

Senate Square, in the heart of Macau, the Fisherman’s Wharf and the Taipa Houses Museum will be the stages of several Portuguese-speaking concerts in the coming days.

In addition to the Portuguese group, this year’s edition brings together musicians from Cape Verde (Grace Évora and Banda), Angola (Paulo Flores), East Timor (Black Jesuz), Mozambique (Moza Band), Brazil (Banda Circulô), Guiné-Bissau (Rui Sangara), Sao Tome and Principe (Alex Dinho) and China (Songjiang Folk Art Group).
