The Ballet of the National Theater of Croatia presents ‘Death in Venice‘ with Portuguese dancer Guilherme Gameiro Alves, at Teatro Camões, in Lisbon.
‘Death in Venice‘, choreography by Valentina Turcu inspired by the homonymous novel by Thomas Mann, will premiere on February 8, at Teatro Camões, according to information from the National Ballet Company.
Spectacle under the Troca program, a program of exchanges with similar companies that the Companhia Nacional de Bailado started this season, under this program, Teatro Camões can receive invited companies that later receive the Portuguese company in their theatres.
The Portuguese dancer, who is the main dancer at the Zagreb Theater, Guilherme Gameiro Alves will thus make his professional debut in Portugal, playing The Angel of Death in this version of ‘Death in Venice’.
Born in Lisbon, graduated from the Conservatory’s Dance School, he obtained a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, then studied two years at the Tanz Akademie Zurich, directed by Oliver Matz.
The National Ballet of Finland was the next stage in his career, where he danced Chevalier des Grieux in Kenneth MacMillan’s ‘Manon’, Benno in Kenneth Greve’s ‘Swan Lake’, Gurn in August Bournonville’s ‘La Sylphide’, among others.
In 2011, he moved to the Croatian National Theater Ballet as a soloist and was promoted to lead dancer in 2017.
According to Dance Europe Magazine, the interpretation of The Angel of Death is one of the five best premieres in Europe in 2018, the statement said.
The dancer already has several awards such as the Gold Medal, in the senior category, at the International Ballet Competition Tanzolymp, in Berlin, and the Oscar Harmos award – the best dancer of the year in Croatia -, for his artistic performance in the 2013/2014 seasons and 2018/2019 at the Croatian National Theater.

The presentation in Lisbon, scheduled for 6:30 pm on February 8, at Teatro Camões, is a unique show by the Croatian company, in Portugal, aimed at an audience over six years old, adds the National Ballet Company document.
Ballet of the Croatian National Theater, which turned 140 in 2019, is the largest and oldest dance company, and is also the resident company, with Zagreb Orchestra and Opera, of the Croatian National Theater.
