Portuguese singer Dulce Pontes opened the Baia das Gatas Music Festival on the island of São Vicente on Friday, where she said she felt “cherished” by the public at the largest and most international music festival in Cape Verde.
According to the Cape Verdean news agency (Inforpress), the 34th edition of the Baia das Gatas International Music Festival began at the scheduled time (9:30 pm) on Friday with the voice of Dulce Pontes.
The stage was followed by Dudu Araújo, who returned to the festival seven years later.
Inforpress says that Dudu Araújo made a trip for his six albums and interpreted some themes from the most recent album.
They followed Cremilda Medina and Ceuzany, the first one to open the stage of the Bay of the Gatas, whereas for Ceuzany it was a return. Dennis Graça acted afterwards, not hiding the emotion by stepping on the main stage of this event.
The first day of the festival ended with the performance of reggae-man Fantan Mojah.
The first day of the festival was attended by Cape Verde’s Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva, who according to Inforpress said that the tourist resort will be “totally different” next year, taking into account the planned works and that should start briefly.
“All this will transform this area of Baía das Gatas into a new centrality of São Vicente,” said the prime minister, for whom the Baia das Gatas International Music Festival is a “great brand” of Cape Verdean music and culture , particularly of São Vicente.
The festival continues today and the poster will feature the performance of DJ Rudy & Vava, the Summer Carnival, the band UB40 with Ali Campbell, Astro & Mickey Virtue, as well as Claudia Leitte and C4 Pedro.
The last day of the festival is hosted by DJ Fatboy & Mc Me, Batchart with Mark Delman and Ary Beatz, Cape Verdean singer Nelson Freitas and Portuguese Richie Campbell & The 911 Band.
The first edition of the Baia das Gatas International Music Festival was held on August 18, 1984, only to be interrupted in 1995 because of a cholera epidemic in Cape Verde.
The event, of international prestige, is held in Baía das Gatas, about eight kilometers from the city of Mindelo, capital of the island of São Vicente.
