The first edition of the Douro Wine City fair, which runs from Friday to Monday, in Peso da Régua, has the participation of 85 producers of wines from Porto and Douro, announced today the organization.
Held in the context of the City of Wine 2019, a distinction awarded to Régua, in the district of Vila Real, this is a fair that aims to showcase the best wines produced in the oldest demarcated and regulated region in the world, the Douro.
“It’s another fair that we want to assert in the region, to promote what we have the best, which are our wines, and that is a tourist bet that brings us many visitors to Peso da Régua and the Douro,” he said. the local mayor, José Manuel Gonçalves.
The event counts on the participation of 85 Porto and Douro wine producers and some exhibitors related to olive oil, almonds, and apples, products that, according to the mayor, “are considered strategic for the region.”
“It’s a Douro fair and we want it to be an economic moment in the whole region,” he said.
During the Douro Wine City will be announced the winners of the first wine contest of the Confraternity of the Wines of the Douro.
Alongside the exhibitors, there will also be a catering area, workshops, quizzes, talks with critics and sommeliers, live cooking demonstrations and musical entertainment.
The conversations will focus on themes such as the freshness of the red wines of the Corgo, the structure, and complexity of the Cima Corgo, the particular profile of the Upper Douro, the new Douro rosés, and the local muscatel and white Port wines.
“We wanted from the first moment to promote the region and the local products and we are confident that we have a program of excellence. Besides being representative of the best we have, it will certainly be a strong pretext for visiting the Douro and Peso da Régua “said José Manuel Gonçalves.
Douro Wine City is the result of the initiative of the Peso Chamber of Régua, with the production of Essência do Vinho, in partnership with the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities (AMPV) and support of the Revista de Vinhos.
The city of Peso da Régua was the first of the Douro to be elected by AMPV Cidade do Vinho, an opportunity that the municipality wants to take advantage of to promote and value the product that is the base of the region’s economy.
The Peso da Régua lives around the wine. Historically it has played an important role as a commercial interposition and service center linked to the wine business.
In the last decades, the city lost its commercial influence, but it became an important tourist spot in the region.
