European social network for rare diseases launched today

The same technology behind Internet dating platforms makes it the first social network in Europe that today brings together rare disease patients, caregivers and researchers from around the world.

The ‘Share4Rare’, a project funded by the European Commission based in the Sant Joan de Déu hospital in Esplugues de Llobregat, in the Spanish city of Barcelona, proposes to contact the families of patients and collect data to advance scientific research throughout the rare diseases.

The technology is the same as the platforms that provide encounters between people who know each other through the Internet, using a system of relating affinities such as disease, profile or country of origin.

In the first phase, ‘Share4Rare’ will focus on research on two major types of disease: pediatric tumours and neuromuscular diseases.
