One of the biggest surprises of 2019 with regard to Portuguese creative music was this group that chose as its name, Lantana, the infesting flowers of the field. And not only because it is exclusively formed by women – it came up with its own musical personality and that differentiates it from the others in the field of improvisation. Right at birth, he had the advantage of an extra projection that took him to other audiences: singer Pena Pena chose him to accompany her in an artistic residency and in several concerts.

When we contextualize the new “Dentro da Janela” (2019) with the previous “Janela” and taking into account other, intermediated projects, such as “AXES” and “Mirrors”, what is evident is that João Mortágua changes a simple evolution in time for one to get more and more “inside”, and more and more deeply, in his own musical ideas. It is no longer just an improvement with experience that is at stake, but an increasing focus on what is essential. Even when the music we are listening to is an amalgamation of various trends in today’s creative music.

JAZZ 2020

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation joins the Porta-Jazz Association and Jazz at the Centro Clube to present Jazz 2020, a cycle with 10 concerts divided between Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra. Between July 31 and August 9, jazz and improvised music with a Portuguese stamp will be on the agenda.

At a time when many artists have seen their projects canceled or postponed, this edition is also a unique opportunity to support more than 60 musicians and the technical teams involved in the production of these concerts.
