In 2018, Rodrigo Leão celebrated the 25th anniversary of a solo career that led him to global recognition. It was in 1993 that Rodrigo, then still an integral part of Madredeus, edited his first work in his own name: Ave Mundi Luminar explored creative corners that did not fit in his previous projects. The record became an unexpected success and the rest, as they say, is history.
In the quarter century that has passed since Ave Mundi Luminar, Rodrigo has become one of the most beloved of all Portuguese artists, and not just among us! Along with the albums that reached the 1st place in the sales charts in Portugal, several of his recordings became international editions in such prestigious brands as Deutsche Grammophon or Sony Classical.
Fearlessly exploring the multiple possibilities of composition, between the popular and the erudite, the electronic and the orchestral, his name is mentioned alongside contemporary music references such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ludovico Einaudi or Jóhann Jóhansson. Wrote soundtracks for films as different as the hit comedy
The Golden Cage, the drama nominated for the Oscars The Butler, the television series Portugal – A Social Portrait or the documentary about the 1960s No Intenso Agora. And, in his songs, he collaborated with artists such as Beth Gibbons from Portishead, Neil Hannon from Divine Comedy, Scott Matthew, Rui Reininho from GNR, Joan as Police Woman, Stuart Staples from Tindersticks or Lula Pena.
Its 25 years of music were celebrated with a year full of stage and studio projects that went through the career retrospective O Aniversário; the relaunch of the soundtrack of Portugal, a Social Portrait under the title Os Portugueses; the invitation to write music for the exhibition at the Gulbenkian Brain Museum – Vaster than Heaven; and a long series of concerts in Portugal and abroad.
