Évora in campaign for European Capital of Culture in festival of short films

A documentary film show promoting Évora’s candidacy for the European Capital of Culture in 2027 is one of the highlights of the 15th International Short Film Festival of Évora (FIKE), which starts today.

The event is held until the 23rd and is organized by Joaquim António d’Aguiar and the Câmara de Évora, with the support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Alentejo, Inter-municipal Community of Central Alentejo (CIMAC ), União de Freguesias de Évora, with other partners.

“It is a festival that, due to its programming, takes a look inside, a bit as a consequence of the films that have presented themselves to the contest. It is a look inside the places where it happens, of a place that can be Évora as another point of the world, “said Carla Magro Dias, of the organization.

This year’s festival features a documentary film show promoting the candidacy of Évora for the European Capital of Culture in 2027, which includes the screening of Graça Castanheira’s “The Stone Will not Wait” and “7 Évoras in Kepa” of José Coimbra and Tiago Guimarães.

‘The stone does not wait’, on the projects of the sculptor João Cutileiro, who lives in Évora, will be presented on the 20th at 6pm at the Teatro Garcia de Resende, while ‘7 Évoras em Kepa’, on the artistic residence of the Basque musician Kepa Junkera in the city, is scheduled for the 22nd, at the same time and in the same place.

As for the contest’s competitive side, according to the festival’s director, 37 films from the four corners of the world, in the categories of animation, fiction and documentary, and this year for the first time, video and new talent.

“We have films from the American and African continents and a great representation of European cinema,” said Carla Magro Dias.

In addition to the competition, which will take place at Teatro Garcia de Resende, FIKE’s program includes cinema for schools, a cycle that starts today, and cinema and video clips from the 16th, scheduled for the Soror Mariana Auditorium.

The jury, composed by Sara Gonçalves, Susana Mourão, José Coimbra, Rui Fernandes and Paulo Santos, will award the prizes for the Best Fiction, Animation and Documentary and diploma for the best Videoclip and New Talent, while the festival’s spectators will check the Prize of the Public.

The director of the festival said that it is already confirmed that FIKE will be held next year, and is scheduled for September 2019.
