FC Porto, who had already qualified for the quarter-finals of the EHF Handball Cup, have now clinched their sixth win in six group games, beating Constanta’s Romanians 30-27.
The ‘dragons’ finished, thus, this phase in the first place of Group C, adding only victories, a feat achieved so far only by the Germans of Kiel.
This is the second time that a Portuguese team reaches the ‘quarters’ since in 2012/13 the competition, the second most important of European clubs, adopted the group stage: Sporting got it in 2013/14.
Once they were already aware of the transition to the next phase, this match was a good opportunity for FC Porto to save players and to turn around. In tactical terms, there was also an opportunity to do some experiments.
The team led by Magnus Andersson dominated throughout the first half, has always been ahead. The Romanians did what they could, circulated the ball well, but they could do nothing to cancel the power of the player.
In the second half, FC Porto returned more sluggish in offensive terms, allowing Constanta to recover from the result, even reaching equality.
By the middle of the second half, this balance remained, but in the last 15 minutes, the ‘blue and white’ recovered the organization on the field and returned to take command.
Next Tuesday, FC Porto will meet their opponents in the quarterfinals of the competition.
