Félix da Costa lost the lead of Formula E with ninth place in Rome
António Félix da Costa (BMW) today lost the lead of the Formula E championship after being ninth in the Rome event, eighth of the 14 rounds scheduled.
The Portuguese rider finished 30.651 seconds behind the winner, New Zealand’s Mitch Evans (Jaguar), falling to second place in the World Championship, one point behind the new commander, Belgian Jerome D’Ambrosio (Mahindra), who was eighth.
Félix da Costa started in 12th place after joining the first qualifying group for being the championship leader.
“I confess that I’m not happy with the day. In qualifying, I did my job and I was faster than my direct opponents, but we already know that group 1 is always on the slowest track,” explained the BWM man.
Felix da Costa won two starting positions, climbing to tenth. However, the test was to be interrupted due to an accident of the Argentine Jose Maria López (Geox Dragon).
In the first lap, the Portuguese climbed two more places after an intense fight with the German (Geox Dragon), during which he would eventually lose a place for the Brazilian Lucas di Grassi (Audi).
“I clearly felt like I was going to pass Gunther and go to the top 5, but this type of riders who are out of the championship fight defend positions in an overly aggressive way, and it took me a long time to get through, and in the middle of this fight I lost position for Di Grassi, “added Felix da Costa.
The Portuguese considered that he could have “made a few more points today“, stressing that he continues “in the championship fight and we must stay focused and prepare the best race in Paris in 15 days.”
Félix da Costa has 64 points against D’Ambrosio’s 65. The German Andre Lotterer (DS) is the third with 62.
