Fernando Pimenta can reach the fourth medal in the European Games
Fernando Pimenta can now become the Portuguese athlete with the most medals in the European Games if he is one of the top three in the final of K1 5,000 meters in Minsk and takes the podium for the fourth time.
After having repeated the silver in K1 1000 on Wednesday, the limian sought to climb one step in the 5,000 meters, in which he was also second in Baku2015.
Three also have Telma Monteiro, who won bronze in the -57 kg category after having been champion for four years, and who also amalgamated silver by teams in Minsk, as well as the trio of acrobatic gymnasts Bárbara Sequeira, Francisca Maia, and Francisca Sampaio Maia, all in the current edition, in Belarus.
In road cycling, Portugal already has the silver of Nelson Oliveira in the counter clock, and today it will be the turn of Rui Oliveira trying to surprise on the track in the scratch test.
Men’s table tennis begins the defense of the collective title, with Marcos Freitas, Tiago Apolónia and João Monteiro, who ‘surrenders’ João Geraldo in relation to the championship team of Baku.
With bronze in the curriculum, beach football plays with Belarus, a challenge that will dictate their future in the competition, towards the semi-finals or away in the group stage.
Portugal has so far won two gold medals, by Fu Yu in table tennis and Carlos Nascimento in the 100 meters, five silver by judo team, Nelson Oliveira and acrobatic gymnasts Bárbara Sequeira, Francisca Maia, and Francisca Sampaio Maia, in combined and dynamic exercise, and Fernando Pimenta in K1 1,000.
In the balance test, the gymnasts still obtained a bronze medal, also reached by the judoka Telma Monteiro (-57 kg), by the mixed courier of the 4×400 meters and by Diogo Ganchinho on the trampolines.
With this performance, Portugal has already surpassed the 10 podiums of Baku and is 11th of the ‘medal’, which accounts for 36 of the 50 countries participating in the European Games.
