The festival organization revealed that “Mosquito” is among the 12 nominees for the “Golden Coconut Awards”, in the category of fiction feature film, whose winner will receive 250,000 yuan (31,600 euros). The third edition of the festival will take place between December 5th and 12th in the city of Sanya, with several cinema sessions scheduled for the beaches of the capital of Hainan, a popular Chinese tourist destination.
“Mosquito”, with the argument of Fernanda Polacow and Gonçalo Waddington, is played by actor João Nunes Monteiro, in the role of Zacarias, a young military man sent to Africa, in the first world war. The film was voted the best international film by the critics of the São Paulo International Film Festival in November.
Days before he had received two prizes at the Mostra de Valencia – Cinema del Mediterrani, in Spain, for best photography for Adolpho Veloso, and for the best soundtrack for the musician Justin Melland.
The feature film was also chosen to open this year’s edition of the Rotterdam film festival (Netherlands), where it was also part of the Official Selection.
“Mosquito” is Portugal’s candidate for the category of Best Ibero-American Film of the Goya Awards of 2021, from Spain, and was one of four films nominated for a Portuguese candidacy for the category of Best International Oscar Film.
“Mosquito” is a production by Leopardo Filmes, by Paulo Branco, in co-production with Alfama Films Production (France), APM Produções (Portugal), Delicatessen Films (Brazil) and Mapiko Filmes (Mozambique), having been shot in the African country.
In addition to “Mosquito“, João Nuno Pinto is also the author of the feature film “América” (2000) and the short films “Don’t swim” (2015) and “Skype me” (2008).
