The Portuguese Jorge Fonseca qualified today for the semi-finals of the -100 kg World Judo competition in Tokyo, while PatrΓ­cia Sampaio was relegated to the -78 kg recap.

The Sporting judoka, who was born in Sao Tome and Principe, will compete for a place in the final of the competition against Azerbaijani Elmar Gasimov, Olympic runner-up at Rio2016 and European in 2014, who also has three bronze medals (in the Europeans of 2012 and 2019 and the 2017 World Cup).

At -73 kg, 20-year-old Patricia Sampaio also won the first three matches against Shu Huei Hsu Wang of China Taipei, Montenegrin Jovana Pekovic and Dutch Marhinde Verkerk, who won the world title in 2009 before being defeated by Japanese world champion Shori Hamada by ippon in the quarterfinals.

The Tomar natural judoka, who has already won the 2018 European Champion and won bronze medals in the 2017 and 2018 World Championships, will face Chinese Zhenzhao Ma, Asian runner-up in 2017 and 2019, to access the bronze medal.

In the same category, Yahima Ramirez was defeated in the first match, by Brazilian Mayra Aguiar.

On Saturday, Portugal will be represented by Rochele Nunes, at +78 kg, before the World Cup closing on Sunday with the team competition.
