Fu Yu and Jorge Fonseca are the athletes of the year for CNID

Table tennis player Fu Yu, gold in the European Games, and judoka Jorge Fonseca, world champion in the -100kg category, are the athletes of the year for the CNID-Association of Sports Journalists, was unveiled today.

The two, who in November had already been awarded the Olympic Committee of Portugal (COP) medal for sporting excellence, were the most voted by the extended jury, composed of journalists specializing in sport, but also by leaders such as the president of the COP, Jose Manuel Constantino.

In the first CNID vote to decide the Best Male Athlete of the Year and Best Female Athlete of the Year, Fu Yu beat the competition of judoka Barbara Timo (-70kg silver in the Tokyo Worlds), the footballer Cláudia Neto (the only 100 in the World), swimmer Diana Durães (eighth in the 800 meters freestyle of Europeans with a short pool) and karateka Patricia Esparteiro (bronze medal in the race).

The 41-year-old Fu Yu won the gold medal at the women’s tournament at the European Games, assuring his presence in Tokyo2020, where he will repeat Rio2016 (33rd), and the silver medal for European teams.

Jorge Fonseca has beaten Italian Serie A winner Cristiano Ronaldo and Premier League champion Bernardo Silva, athlete João Vieira (50km silver in the Qatar World Cup), and surfer Frederico Morais, who guaranteed the return to the world elite that will represent Portugal at the Olympic Games.

Jorge Fonseca, 27, was the first Portuguese to win a world judo title by winning the -100 kg category in the competition held in Tokyo.

Still in 2019, the Sao Tome and Principe native judoka, the European Under-23 champion in 2013, was part of the Portuguese team that won silver in the team competition at the European Games in Minsk.
