Technology will double international operations centre for suppliers. Portugal was ahead of countries like Spain.
The door had already been opened in November in an interview with Insider magazine: Matt Brittin, Google’s boss for Europe, already admitted that US technology investment in Portugal could increase in the coming years. The confirmation arrived this Saturday through the news in the weekly Expresso: Google will double the international operations centre for suppliers, located in Oeiras. An additional 800 people will be hired; that is, this centre will have 1300 people after this phase of expansion.
“The Government and AICEP have been following this investment from Google for a long time. Now, Google is going to increase jobs from 535 to about 1300 people, “Eurico Brilhante Dias, secretary of state for internationalization, told the weekly. Portugal was chosen to the detriment of other countries: “it was a competitive process that we won to other countries, namely Spain,” he adds.
After the contract was signed three weeks ago, the adaptation works will start and the new spaces are expected to start operating in the summer of 2019. This operations centre will occupy a total of 13,000 square meters in Lagoas Park. Lisbon could become the second largest hub of Google in Europe, surpassed only by Dublin, the capital of Ireland.
In addition to this hub, Google has also announced in an interview with Insider that it will triple the training target of Android operating system programmers from 1000 to 3000 people.
