Greta Thunberg awarded by Amnesty International

Greta Thunberg, the young environmental activist and the movement she created from climate strikes were designated Amnesty International’s “Conscientious Ambassadors” in 2019.

Kumi Naidoo, Secretary-General of Amnesty International said,
“All the young people who participate in the ‘Future for Future’ personify what it means to act in consciousness. They remind us that we are more powerful than we know and that we all have a role to play in protecting human rights against climate catastrophe.”

The award has already been given to people such as former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo, the indigenous rights movement in Canada, American singer and actress Alicia Keys or the American sportsman Colin Kaepernick, among others was now handed over to Greta Thunberg.

“It’s an honour” to receive the prize, Greta Thunberg said, adding: “This is not my prize, it’s a prize for everyone. It’s amazing to see the recognition we’re having and to know that we’re fighting for something that has an impact. ”

The young activist was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by three Norwegian deputies.

Amnesty International further stresses that the consequences of the impacts of climate change are also an urgent human rights issue, and aggravate the widening of inequalities.

It calls on States to intensify action to change the current course.
