Guarda Parish Council provides community garden

The urban garden includes the provision of free fractions of land for cultivation to families in the city interested in the project.

In the garden space, the Junta de Freguesia da Guarda currently accounts for nearly 40 plots of land that are distributed to an equal number of households.

The agricultural project is transversal to the entire population residing in the city of Guarda.

The garden is frequented by people who live in the city and have a very large rural ancestry, by people who do not need anything from the community garden from the point of view of their subsistence, because they have enough other resources for this, but who like the activity, and by residents who want and use the community garden as a way to rectify and improve their layoff.

The urban garden is installed on a land located in the city center, next to the Guarda Municipal Theater complex, which was given free by the owners to the Parish Council for that purpose.

The project started in 2015 with a training action in the agricultural area carried out by the Guarda Parish Council in conjunction with the Employment and Professional Training Institute (IEFP).

Since then, year after year, on a land that was previously abandoned, various agricultural crops have grown, such as potatoes, garlic, onions, cabbages, beans, peppers and tomatoes, among others.

The success of the initiative is due, in the opinion of João Prata, to the fact that the land made available to citizens is located in the center of the city and has plenty of water for irrigating agricultural crops.
