HBO dominated the Emmy Awards taking 30 awards

In the acting categories, the HBO series (107 nominations) won awards to several protagonists, including Regina King, for “Watchmen”, Jeremy Strong, for “Succession”, Zendaya, for “Euphoria”, and Mark Ruffalo, for “I Know This Much is True”.

Succession” was considered the Best Drama Series of the year, “Watchmen” won the Emmy for Best Miniseries, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” was the Best Variety Series, “talk show”, and “Bad Education” won in the category for Best Television Film.

The figures indicate that HBO has managed to outperform the competition, with special attention to the Netflix streaming platform, which had even received a record number of nominations for the Emmys, 160, more than any other chain in history.

Netflix totaled 21 Emmy Awards, with only two of the main categories, Maria Schrader, for “Unorthodox“, in the making, and Julia Garner, for Best Supporting Actress, in “Ozark“.

The same happened with the streaming service Amazon Prime, which performed poorly, unlike what happened in the Emmys edition in 2019. The platform took only four statuettes, all for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”.

Disney Plus and NBC, with eight Emmys each, were the highlights outside the podium of streaming platforms that in recent years have been battling for dominance of the television landscape.

Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” won seven statuettes. This streaming service was launched in the United States less than a year ago and arrived in Portugal this month.

With no big surprises at the awards, the 72nd Emmys ceremony took place in Los Angeles, also without an audience, due to the covid-19 pandemic, and was presented by Jimmy Kimmel.
