H&M has a machine that recycles old garments

The “Looop” recycling system has already opened to the public at one of the H&M stores in Stockholm, Sweden. This new service allows you to transform old parts into new ones in just a few hours.

This is one of the brand’s initiatives, which aims to become fully circular and positive for the environment. The idea is to innovate in materials and processes, inspiring customers to use the garments as long as possible.

This is the first time that a fashion brand has introduced a piece-to-piece recycling system in store, giving customers the opportunity to see how old textiles are recycled, turning them into new ones.

Looop” turns old pieces into new ones. The pieces are cleaned, crushed into fibers and converted into a new thread that is then knitted into a new piece. During the process, it is necessary to add some virgin materials from sustainable sources, however the percentage used is the lowest possible. The system does not use water or chemicals, thus having a significantly lower environmental impact than producing a piece of clothing from scratch.

The brand intends to lead the change towards a sustainable fashion industry. Customers can use Looop to transform their old clothes into new ones for around €14.5. All profits will be used in projects related to the research of materials. By 2030, the H&M Group aims to use only recycled materials or from sustainable sources. In 2019 the use was 57%.
