IPO do Porto has new facilities to welcome more blood donors

The Immunotherapy Service of the IPO-Porto inaugurated today, National Donor Day, a new space, with about 300 square meters, to welcome more donors and make the gift more comfortable, said the president of the institute, Laranja Pontes.

According to this person, in 2018, the IPO of Porto recorded 9,257 donations of which 1,121 were platelet components per apheresis. In the same year, the IPO-Porto received 1,759 new donors, an increase of 12% over the previous year.

These donations allowed for the first time “the IPO has been self-sufficient in erythrocyte concentrate,” he said.

The expansion of the Immunohemotherapy Service will involve a new collection room, which will have a larger capacity, and a new waiting room, which will allow to receive more donors. This project also has as a primary objective to reorganize the service and expand the laboratory area.

“This improvement of the facilities is in line with the strategy of attracting more and more young donors and with the idea of ​​creating a Blood Bank, in the context of solidarity and future deposit,” highlighted Laranja Pontes.

According to the IPO, blood donations made it possible to treat 1,756 patients, while the donation of platelets for apheresis benefited the approximately 400 patients who regularly and annually require platelet transfusion.

At the IPO-Porto, the collection takes place from Monday to Friday, between 08:30 and 19:00, and on Saturday, 08:30 to 12:30.
