IVDP approves 2020 vintage announcement
The benefit of 102,000 barrels, 550 liters each, (92,000 plus 10,000 qualitative reserves) of must for the production of Port Wine was established. This is the main result of the 2020 Vintage Announcement approved today by the Interprofessional Council (CI) of the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto, I.P. (IVDP).
The amount of Port Wine that will result from the next harvest (benefit) is reduced compared to 2019 due to the sales drops in the national and international market.
To mitigate the effects of the crisis motivated by the reduction of consumption habits and the closing of restaurants in the context of the pandemic COVID-19, the Ministry of Agriculture launched exceptional measures to support the sector, namely:
1. Specific Measure for the Douro Demarcated Region (RDD):
- € 5 M for the creation of a Qualitative Port Wine Reserve;
2. Measures for regions with specific viticulture characteristics, where the RDD fits:
-
i) Crisis distillation. The budget allocation for this measure is 12 M €:
€ 0.75/liter for Wines with OD
€ 0.65/liter for Wines with GI
-
ii) Crisis storage. The budget allocation for this measure is 6 M €:
€ 0.16/hectoliter/day, up to a maximum of € 15,000 per beneficiary. Minimum volume of 20 hectoliters per application.
“The benefit determined today, along with exceptional measures, brings more tranquility to the sector, contributing to counteract the effects of this crisis and ensuring the income of winegrowers”, defends Gilberto Igrejas, president of the IVDP.
