João Monteiro and Tiago Apolónia win the bronze medal at the World Cup

The Portuguese duo João Monteiro and Tiago Apolónia won today the bronze medal in the competition of pairs of the World Championships of table tennis, failing access to the final of the race, which is taking place in Budapest. Yet it is an unprecedented feat in the history of the sport.

A defeat that knows victory! João Monteiro and Tiago Apolónia lost in the semi-finals of the table tennis World Cups with the Romanian Ovidiu Ionescu and the Spaniard Alvaro Robles 4-3. The Portuguese duo misses access to the final but secures the first ever medal for Portugal in the table tennis World Cups.

Monteiro and Apolónia had a four-point lead (8-4) in the final, but they lost 11-8, mainly due to the Romanian athlete’s performance.

The desired presence in a world finals has thus far failed. The first time the two players made a double was in 1993, in individual national Championships of the initiates, when Tiago Apolónia played in Clube Estrela da Amadora and João Monteiro in Grupo Sportivo Sports.

The first medal won by Portugal in a World Championship in the senior category will be received on Saturday at 13.00 (Lisbon time) in a ceremony that will take place after the final between Ovidiu Ionescu / Alvaro Robles and the Chinese Ma Long / Wang Chuqin.
