João Sousa rises seven places and is 42nd in the world ranking

Portuguese tennis player João Sousa climbed seven places to 42nd in the world tennis ranking after a week of reaching the semi-finals of the Swiss Gstaad tournament on clay.

The Vimaranense, who has the best position in the hierarchy 28th place, in May 2016, has progressed a total of 27 positions in the last three weeks, in which he was in Wimbledon, Bastad, and Gstaad.

João Sousa, 30, is the only Portuguese player in the ‘top 100’, and Pedro Sousa, who ‘fell’ injured in the semi-finals of Tampere’s challenger, is close in 105th place after climb eight places. It was 99th this year.

For his part, João Domingues is 171º (down one position), Gonçalo Oliveira follows in 251º (up one), Frederico Silva is 273º (up 25) and Gastão Elias, former number 57, in 2016, remains out of the ‘top 300’ at 317th (up five).

In the top 10, the only change was Italian Fabio Fognini’s move up to ninth in exchange with Russian Daniil Medveded on a table led by Serbian Novak Djokovic, followed by Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Swiss Roger Federer.

In the women’s table, the ‘top 10’ remained unchanged, with Australian Ashleigh Barty continuing, seconded by Japan’s Naomi Osaka and Czech Karolina Pliskova.
