Tennis player João Sousa won the first point for Portugal today in the qualifying round with Belarus, in Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group I, which is taking place in Minsk.

Portugal’s number one 64th-ranked ATP beat Ilya Ivashka (135th ATP), the second-best player of the opposing team, in three sets, 4-6, 6-1 and 6 -2, in an hour and 40 minutes, at the Republic Olympic Tennis Center.

Thanks to the triumph of 30-year-old João Sousa, Portugal scored the first qualifying point to qualify for the Davis Cup Finals qualifying round of 2020, with the losing team relegated to the maintenance play-offs in Group I, to be played in March next year.

After the clash between the Vimaranense and Ilya Ivashka, João Domingues will face Egor Gerasimov, leader of the Belarusian team and 119th ATP, in the second Davis Cup singles meeting.
