José Avillez is in the list of the 100 best chefs in the world

José Avillez, ‘chef’ at ‘Belcanto’, two Michelin stars in Lisbon, and about a dozen other restaurants in Portugal and Dubai, took 70th place, one place behind the Austrian Hans Neuner.

The title of Best Cook was awarded to the Danish René Redzepi, followed by Björn Frantzén, who had been the winner of last year’s edition. In third place was the American Dan Barber. Also with restaurants in Portugal, Spaniards Martin Berasategui and Eneko Atxa ranked 37th and 17th, respectively.

This year’s edition was held in virtual format, with the organization spreading the awards throughout the day, through social networks.

The distinction, created by the Italian Cristian Gadau and the company TBC MediaCorp, intends to highlight the cook at the expense of the restaurant, and the selection of the nominees is part of “independent archers of the platform.

The ‘Legend’ award was given to the Frenchman Michel Bras, from the restaurant ‘Le Suquet’, who won three Michelin stars in 1999 and left the guide in 2018 at the request of his son, Sébastien Bras.

Brazilian Rafa Costa e Silva won the ‘Followers’ award, while fellow countryman Manu Bufarra received the ‘Rising Star’ distinction.

The Science Award, for the cook who excels in research, experimental techniques and transformation, went to the chef Rasmus Munk.
