A photograph taken by photographer José Goulão, taken during a rescue of migrants in the Mediterranean, won the best photo award of 2018 of the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN), was announced today.
According to the information available on the AMAN website, the photograph was taken on 27 October 2017, off the coast of Pozzallo in Sicily, during a mission that the Lusa agency accompanied in the Mediterranean aboard a Portuguese Navy frigate.
According to José Goulão, it is a picture of “a boat with migrants that came from Libya to Lampedusa, with 48 people, including a woman and a child”, and “accounts for the moment when the child is removed from the boat by the marines “.
The migrants were handed over to the Italian authorities 19 hours after being rescued from the vessel where they followed, which was at risk of fire.
The AMAN prize – a diploma, commemorative plaque and $ 500 – was delivered by the European Commissioner for Migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, in Cape Sounion, Greece, during the organization’s general assembly.
Each of the news agencies can compete annually with a photo.
