The confirmation was given by the mayor of Viseu.
The Tour of Spain by bicycle will pass through Portugal as early as 2020. Almeida Henriques, mayor of Viseu will be in Madrid this Tuesday for the presentation of ‘Vuelta’, having confirmed to TSF radio that the Spanish race will pass through Portuguese lands next year.
“It is historic. It is important for the connection that Viseu has with cycling, but also for the promotion of the region in the Spanish market. Viseu is linked to the Tour de Portugal from the beginning and, from now on, is now also linked to Vuelta,” he said. Almeida Henriques, also revealing that this Portuguese presence in the Spanish competition is a partnership between Viseu and Turismo do Centro.
The stage that will pass through Viseu will be the penultimate of Vuelta, on September 4, 2020. Before that, on day 3, Vuelta will also have another stage in Portugal. The second to last stage will pass through Viana do Castelo and end in the city of Porto.
This treading of Portuguese lands is not, however, a novelty, but a return. In 1997, Vuelta started in Lisbon and crossed the Alentejo and the Algarve before entering Spain.
