After having put on sale in June in its stores a collection of t-shirts made with organic cotton, Lidl will launch at the end of the month the first line of own-brand sneakers made with recycled plastic. They are for the whole family and 25% of the fabric of these sneakers is Ocean Bound Plastic, that is plastic collected from beaches, islands and coastal areas (in this specific case in Asia).
The remaining 75% of the fabric of this sports shoe is made from plastic bottles collected and recycled in a conventional manner. The bottles are pressed, cleaned and crushed so that they can be processed into recycled fabric threads, which are then used to manufacture the sneakers.
Thus, the entire textile part of Lidl’s Ocean Bound Plastic collection (the exterior is made of breathable mesh) is 100% made of recycled plastic, and represents about 20% of the total of sneakers.
In pink, gray and black, each model of these sneakers from the Ocean Bound Plastic collection, from the Crivit brand, is produced with approximately 11 to 16 plastic bottles. According to the non-governmental organization WWF, about 32% of the plastic produced worldwide is released into the environment and into the oceans, increasing its pollution and putting into
risk the animals.
The reduction of the environmental impact, the traceability of raw materials, the fulfillment of socially acceptable working conditions and the sustainability of the ecosystem, are some of the main objectives. An example of this is the TransforMAR project, already in its 3rd edition on Portuguese beaches, in which holidaymakers are challenged to place their plastic and metal waste in their own deposit, preventing their destination from being the sea.
By the end of 2020, Lidl also set a goal to carry all its own brand products, including the respective packaging and labels composed of cellulose, to recycled material or to certified virgin fibers, to support the more responsible use of cellulose and protect the forests.
