Malta, from reality to fiction

Imagine walking through the great door of King’s Landing, or the neighboring village where the iconic Popeye is immortalized and still walking through the same streets as the first mathematical woman – Hypatia of Alexandria.

Malta is the scene of multiple scenarios, from major Hollywood productions like Troia, to internationally renowned series like Game of Thrones.

Directors and producers of the seventh art choose, on several occasions, this Mediterranean archipelago as a setting and recording environment.

For this reason, the country has become a pilgrimage spot for viewers and fans who do not miss the opportunity to experience and relive their favorite films and series.

Popeye

In the northeast of the island, more specifically in Anchor Bay, an entire city was built to give life to the most famous sailor on television, played by Robin Williams.

Since 1980, this coastal city has remained intact and has been converted into a theme park that delights all those who visit it.

Troia

Launched in 2004, starring actors like Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, the Hollywood blockbuster – Troia, has different scenarios spread across the archipelago.

In addition to Fort Ricasoli, the film was shot on beaches such as Golden Bay, northeast of Malta or the Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino.

Agora

Directed by Alejandro Amenábar in 2009, Malta gave life to Alexandria, where he lived the renowned mathematics – Hipátia.

The production took place in different areas of the archipelago, such as Fort Ricasoli, where decorations were built that included houses, the Agora, temples and the famous Hypatia chair, in Mdina, Valletta or Marsaxlokk.

These constructions are still intact and can be visited.

Game of Thrones

During the first season of the epic Game of Thrones series, the city of silence and the ancient capital of Malta, Mdina, became King’s Landing, capital of the Seven Kingdoms.

The cliffs of Gozo were transformed outside Pentos, the temporary residence of the brothers Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen.

The famous Blue Window was the place chosen to celebrate the marriage between the Mother of Dragons and Khal Drogo.

World War Z

Valletta, the capital of Malta and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, became the scene of some of the scenes from the First World War.

This film, which stars Brad Pitt, broke box office records on its debut in 2013.

Malta has been considered a prime location for filming for more than 50 years, with a long list of names including James Bond (1997), The Island of the Cut Heads (1995), Gladiator (2000), The Vengeance of the Count of Monte Cristo (2002 ), Alexandre the Great (2004), among others.
