The festival Matosinhos in Jazz returns in July to that locality of the district of Porto with a poster that includes the Portuguese musicians Salvador Sobral, Ricardo Toscano, Bruno Pernadas and the Israeli Avishai Cohen, was announced today.
The Matosinhos in Jazz, which starts on July 6th and is free to enter, in addition to concerts includes an exhibition in which four Portuguese artists – Bráulio Amado, Kruella D’Enfer, Catarina Glam, and Pedro MKK – recreate iconic disc coverings of jazz, according to the promoter of the initiative, in a statement released today.
The concerts take place on Saturdays and Sundays in July at 18:00.
On the first weekend of the festival, on July 6th and 7th, respectively, saxophonist Ricardo Toscano, who “despite the young age (25 years) stands out for many years for his artistic boldness and progressive vision of jazz” , and the singer Inês Pimenta, who will present the album “Son of Daedalus”.
For the second weekend, on July 13 and 14, performances by the British pianist Joe Armon Jones, “representing the new jazz scene of the United Kingdom”, and guitarist Bruno Pernadas, will be presented. his multifaceted musical work with various incursions at the stylistic level that travels from jazz to afrobeat to improvisation.
On the third weekend, on July 20 and 21, there will be concerts, respectively, by singer Salvador Sobral, who will present his latest work, “Paris, Lisbon”, and trumpet player Susana Santos Silva, who will perform with a training which includes alto saxophone, flute, piano, double bass and drums.
On the first three weekends, the concerts take place in the bandstand in front of the Matosinhos City Hall, while the “great closing” of Matosinhos Jazz takes place last weekend in Guilhermina Suggia Square.
On the 26th, the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra invites the Dutch singer Fay Claasen. “A unique voice that unites in a single sound entity with the Jazz Orchestra of Matosinhos on a special night,” the organization says.
The last night of the festival, on July 27th, is the responsibility of the Israeli bass player Avishai Cohen, “one of the greatest contemporary references in the jazz contrabass, being a composer and vocalist”, with the Symphonic Orchestra of Porto Casa da Música.
Throughout the month of July, in the Basílio Teles Garden, next to the Camera of Matosinhos, the exhibition in which Braulio Amado, Kruella D’Enfer, Catarina Glam, and Pedro MKK recreate covers of jazz discs.
The designer Bráulio Amado will recreate the cover of Naked City, an album by the American saxophonist John Zorn, which dates back to 1990. Artists Kruella D’Enfer and Catarina Glam will recreate the albums “Latin in Satin” ( 1958), by American singer Billie Holiday, and “Brilliant Corners” (1957) by American pianist Thelonious Monk. The photographer Pedro MKK will recreate the cover of “Getz / Gilberto” (1963), the American saxophonist Stan Getz and the Brazilian singer João Gilberto.
