“Missa Fadista – Fados for Santo António”

Jubilee of 800 years of Saint Anthony as Franciscan

On the 15th of August, the beginning of the celebrations of the Jubilee of 800 years of “Santo António” as Franciscan, with the “Missa Fadista – Fados para Santo António”, also celebrating the Assumption of Our Lady in Heaven.

There was little space in the Church of Santo António de Lisboa for all those who attended to share this devotion to Santo António and Our Lady in the Encounter with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and with the memories of Mary.

But it is Santo António and his devotion that many resort mainly to the Church of Santo António de Lisboa, which rises over the place where he was born before he left the world as a preacher, eventually dying in Padua, Italy, making this devotion the identity of a people who live and transmit spiritual and cultural values.

During the 800th anniversary of Santo António as a Franciscan, several liturgical celebrations were valued here in the Lisbon church of Santo António, as was the case of “Missa Fadista – Fados for Santo António”, a Mass whit “Fado“.

The fadistas Célia Leiria and José Quaresma, were accompanied by the musicians André Dias on the Portuguese guitar, Ivan Cardoso on the “fado” viola and Máximo Ciuro on the bass viola.

On this day, fado evoked all the spirituality of a Mass, as special as this one, having experienced magical moments that will certainly last in the memory of all those who managed to secure their place.

In this Jubilee of 800 years of Santo António as Franciscan, several events will be held until January 2021, with the sponsorship of the Church of Santo António de Lisboa, the Museum of Santo António, the Center for Studies and Research of Santo António, the Monastery de São Vicente de Fora, the Quo Vadis of Lisbon – Tourism and EGEAC.

Examples of these events are the Route of Santo António or the Exhibitions of the Lisbon Museum of Santo António, which give voice to the life and work of “Santo António” and the temporary exhibition that focuses on the “Santo Antónioprocession that takes place annually on 13 June and travels through the streets of the historic Alfama district (this year, due to COVID 19, this procession did not take place).

The “fadista” Mass was also one of those religious events, which celebrated the Jubilee. “Santo António de Lisboa” was born in 1191 in Lisbon. He joined the Order of Regular Canons of Santa Cruz, at the Convent of São Vicente de Fora, and then at the Convent of Santa Cruz de Coimbra, where he completed his studies. He became a Franciscan in 1220 when he learned of the martyrdom of the Holy Martyrs of Morocco.

Rota de Santo António” in Lisbon is also another event in which everyone can participate. It takes place on Saturdays in the morning and makes a whole journey that experiences the life of the Saint in Lisbon, visiting several churches.

This “Fadista” Mass ended with the “Responsório” to “Santo António”, a prayer that all devotees of “Santo António” pray, namely when they want something from him:

If miracles you desire,
I turned to Santo Antônio;
You will see the demon flee
And hellish temptations.
The lost is recovered,
The harsh prison is broken
And at the height of the hurricane
Give in to the impoverished sea.

All human evils
Moderate, withdraw,
Let those who saw it say it,
And say the Paduans.
The lost is recovered,
The harsh prison is broken
And at the height of the hurricane
Give in to the impoverished sea.

Through your intercession
Flee the plague, the error, the death,
The weak becomes strong
And he becomes the sick person.
The lost is recovered,
The harsh prison is broken
And at the height of the hurricane
Give in to the impoverished sea.

Glory to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The lost is recovered,
The harsh prison is broken
And at the height of the hurricane
Give in to the impoverished sea.

V: Pray for us, Blessed António.

A: So that we are worthy of Christ’s promises.
