More than 10.5 million visitors in Macau in the first quarter

Macau received more than 10.5 million visitors in the first quarter, an increase of 21.2% over the same period last year, according to official data released today.

The number of visitors (5,624,732) and tourists (4,735,026) increased by 33.4% and 9.3%, respectively, year-on-year, totalling 10,359,758 visitors in Macao in the first three months of the year, according to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Visitors are understood to mean any person who has travelled to Macao for less than one year, a term that is divided into a tourist (one who spends at least one night) and a traveller (one who does not stay overnight).

Between January and March, according to DSEC, most visitors came from the interior of China (7,448,291), up 23.5% compared to the same period last year.

Visitors from Hong Kong (1,793,114), South Korea (262,051) and Taiwan (261,853) increased by 21.3%, 9.2% and 3.3%, respectively, on an annual basis.

Visitors from the United States (50,206), Australia (23,965), Canada (20,830) and the United Kingdom (13,860) also increased year-on-year.

According to the DSEC, in March alone the territory registered 3.388.931 visitors.

In 2018, Macau hit the record number of tourists: 35.8 million, an increase of 9.8% over 2017.
