More than three million visitors to Macau in January
More than three million people visited Macao in January, an increase of 24.9% year-on-year and a decline of 4.1% compared to last December, it was announced today.
According to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), the number of hikers (1,783,758) and tourists (1,641,368) increased by 41.8 and 10.7%, respectively, on a yearly basis, totalling 3,425,126 visitors to Macau last month.
Visitors are understood to mean any person who has travelled to Macao for less than one year, a term that is divided into a tourist (one who spends at least one night) and a traveller (one who does not stay overnight).
According to DSEC, the majority of visitors come from the interior of China (2,504,494), up 29.9% compared to the same period last year.
Visitors from South Korea (99,463), Hong Kong (533,740) and Taiwan (86,860) increased by 1.6%, 21.7% and 3.9%, respectively, on an annual basis.
Visitors from the United States (16,509), Australia (11,020), Canada (6,572) and the United Kingdom (4,298) also increased year-on-year.
The average length of stay was 1.2 days, minus 0.1 days in annual terms, as the proportion of visitors (52.1% of the total) increased by 6.2 percentage points.
As for the route of entry into the territory, the number of visitors entered by land (2,528,646) rose in January, 60.3% in annual terms. Of this number, 443,908 entered via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge.
The number of visitors arrived by air (321,938) increased by 17.9% in annual terms, while by sea (583,542) decreased by 35.1%.
In 2018, Macau received more than 35.8 million tourists, an increase of 9.8% over 2017.
