Mozambique receives 32 million to support the cyclone-affected population

Mozambique has received a total of US $ 36 million (32 million euros) and around 12 thousand tons of miscellaneous goods to support the people affected by Cyclone Idai in central Mozambique, an official source said.

What is being declared is what has already been made available,” said Augusta Maita, director general of the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC). “We have announced some support that has not been given to us yet.

She was speaking during a press conference in the city of Beira, central Mozambique.

The donations are the result of campaigns being developed both inside and outside the country to support the approximately 1.4 million people affected by Idai in central Mozambique.

Augusta Maita said that the Mozambican government hired an independent company to ensure logistical issues, a measure aimed at making goods and products more flexible for affected populations.

Everything is being done so that the goods received are judiciously transferred to the affected populations,” added the director-general of INGC.

Cyclone Idai hit the central region of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe on March 14.

In Mozambique, according to INGC data, the passage of Cyclone Idai will have caused at least 598 deaths and 1,641 injuries.
