MUPA Festival takes Necro Deathmort and Nazar to Beja

The inaugural edition of the festival MUPA – Music in the Plain will bring names like Necro Deathmort, Nazar or 10,000 Russians to the historical centre of Beja, from May 10 to 11, and the poster is closed, the organization announced today.

The inaugural poster was closed today with the addition of the British duo Necro Deathmort, Angolan producer Nazar, Simply Rockers Soundsystem, punk band Putas Bêbadas, Portuguese 10,000 Russians, and the Alentejo band Paulo Colaço & Mocinhos in Cante e the Lisbon project unitedstatesof.

The duo Matthew Rozeik and AJ Cookson have composed Necro Deathmort since 2007, and the last studio work dates back to 2018, ‘Vol. 4 ‘, consolidating the place in the’ underground ‘British scene.

The authors of ‘Overland’ (2017) or ‘The Capsule’ (2016) are the most impressive names in the programming, which also includes Portuguese rapper Allen Halloween, Norberto Lobo or the junction between Lena d’Água and the jazz musician Tahina Rahary.

One of MUPA’s international proposals is Angolan producer Nazar, 25, based in the British city of Manchester and to reflect in the debut EP “Enclave“, released at the end of 2018, the “extreme violence, injustice and omnipresence of a repressive state during and after the Angolan civil war “.

According to the presentation of the work, on the online musical platform Bandcamp, the musician’s production began after the end of the conflict, in 2002, when he returned to Angola after being raised in Belgium, starting with looking “for kuduro music”.

Nazar inverts kuduro, mixing sounds of war, like weapons to be carried and air raid noises, with synthesizers and a percussive cascade and the use of ‘noise’“, can be read.

The lyrics, in turn, focus on “massacres and violence, with cries against dictatorship,” to reflect “the musician’s tumultuous journey and honour the nameless dead,” taking “Angola’s past to make sense of Your gift“.

There will also be several DJs, such as Caroline Lethô, as well as projects of various musical genres, from the psychedelic music of the 10,000 Russians to the junction of JP Simões and Miguel Nicolau, in the Bloom project, Mynda Guevara’s criollo hip-hop, the Rodrigo Beloved Motion Trio or Systemic Violence, among other names.

In the presentation of the event, on the website, MUPA states that it seeks to “integrate a broad musical universe right in the heart of the historic city of Beja“, crossing musical genres and generations of artists to “transgress barriers and customs“.

Organized by the CulturMais association and the Câmara de Beja, the festival has sold more than 100 general passes, now for sale for ten euros, until April 15, and 13 euros until the dates of the event.
